This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL shows 61k miles and is a matching numbers example that was purchased new by the current owner’s father in 1960 from the Mercedes-Benz corporate dealership in downtown Toronto. Power is provided from the original 1.9-liter inline-four paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. The current owner inherited the car from her father in 1977 and over the course of her ownership, has conducted a bare metal repaint in the original color, a reupholstering of the interior, and installation of a new soft top. Complete service records date back 42 years and document regular maintenance, most recently an oil service and alignment. Reported to have been garage kept since new, kept out of inclement weather, and driven sparingly by three family members throughout its life, the car is sold with its original books and manuals, tool kit, and removable large window hardtop. The car is now imported to Europe and sold with Ontario title and Import documents stating all import duties are paid. German registration can be provided at no extra cost.
The car was repainted in 1987 in the original black lacquer and the older finish is said to retain a good shine today according to the seller. Light chips along various panel edges have been touched up over the years with additional imperfections said to include a section of orange peel on the passenger door, a small blister on the trunk, and a minor blemish along the passenger side of the windshield. Color-matched hubcaps contain some light wear and the Michelin tires have been driven approximately 10k miles according to the seller.
The front and rear bumpers, bumper guards, wheel trim rings and stone guards were re-chromed in 1987 and present well according to the seller along with the grill and remaining trim. Detailed photos exhibit a small ding on the grill, and some light pitting to the driver’s mirror and rear 190SL emblem. A new German soft top was installed this year by the seller and a new passenger mirror is included in the sale.
The seats and door panels were reupholstered in 1979 in the original tan leather. The padded dash, sun visors, and rear carpet shows signs of wear and are shown in detail in the main gallery. With the exception of the analog clock, instruments remain functional. The odometer shows 60,655 miles and is reported by the seller to be an accurate lifetime total.
New front rubber floor mats and sill plate rubber trim were fitted in 2014 while a pair of lap belts were installed by the seller’s father in-law. The trunk floor was repainted at the time of the exterior repaint.
Paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, the 1.9-liter m121 inline-four is said to remain unmodified and regularly serviced since new, with complete service records retained since 1975. In addition to routine maintenance, invoices through the years document the replacement of the starter, fuel pump, water pump, clutch disc, master cylinder, brake shoes, wheel bearings, center drag link, and wheel bearings. Servicing in 2017 includes a complete oil, filter, and lubrication service and wheel alignment.
Photos of the undercarriage are included in the gallery and display some light surface rust noted by the seller, as well as a small perforation to the floor boards as shown in detail below.
Pictured above and included in the sale is the factory optional removable hardtop, original owners and shop manuals, factory took kit, and dust cover.
