This 1972 Datsun 240Z is a just-refreshed Series II finished in fresh metallic blue over white. Powered by its original 2.4-liter inline-six and 4-speed manual gearbox, the car reportedly stayed with its first owner in California until a decade ago, when came to Oklahoma. It was stored indoors between occasional uses until its recent acquisition by the seller, who performed the mechanical disassembly, cosmetic refurbishment, and rebuild detailed in over 260 photos below. Now described as a solid, dependable and turn-key example, it features new paint and minor modifications including Weber carburetors, an aluminum radiator, and lowering springs. This 240Z is sold with the removed original parts, a choice between two sets of wheels, and an Oklahoma title and import papers.
The body has received new base/clear exterior paint in its original code 115 Blue Metallic, with the resulting finish shown in a variety of lights and angles in the photos below. The car was stripped of all trim, glass, and weatherstripping before paint, while the doors, hood, and hatch were removed and painted separately. No evidence of rust or prior rust repair was found during the process according to the seller, and the rear hatch sill is detailed in the photos below along with many other common rust areas.
Glass is said to be original including the windshield, while all new weatherstripping and window felts were installed after the paintwork. The seller notes that original unrestored bumpers are retained along with other small trim details. The car is available either with the Panasport wheels pictured here, which are in need of fresh tires, or the dealer-optioned aluminum slot mags shown below and mounted with Firestone rubber in better condition.
The factory white interior was freshened as necessary, including new seat covers and re-dyed side panels, while door panels remain original. The uncovered dash shows no warping according to the seller, and a single crack runs down the center as photographed below. New loop-style carpet was installed over factory insulation. Interior sheet metal is said to be solid and photos are provided of the bare inner doors, floors, and cargo area, which are said to retain original paint.
Factory instruments include a 5-digit odometer that currently shows just under 77k miles and is thought to be accurate by the seller, who has added 500 of those during the last two months. The air conditioning system benefits from a new period dealer-style compressor and has been retrofitted for use with R134a refrigerant. The factory AM/FM radio is in place and works, but the original speakers need to be replaced. Additional accessory issues are reportedly limited to a non-working clock and the bouncy ammeter needle.
The numbers-matching 2.4-liter inline-six was inspected and new gaskets were installed during the recent work. Photos are provided with the polished valve cover removed to show condition of the valvetrain. Induction is from dual Weber downdraft carburetors on Cannon intake manifolds, though the original dual SU setup is also included. Exhaust is via a polished header feeding aftermarket piping, and original emissions equipment has been removed but is also included.
A new starter has been installed and underhood modifications include a welded aluminum radiator. The engine bay is said to retain original paint, and photos are provided of common rust areas including around the battery tray, which is said to remain solid along with all other underhood sheet metal. Shifting is via a 4-speed manual transmission, which received a new clutch kit during the recent work.
Original suspension components were removed, sandblasted, and powder coated before reinstallation with polyurethane bushings throughout. Lowering springs were fitted, while all other components were reportedly inspected and either cleaned, rebuilt, or replaced. A hydraulic overhaul included new clutch and brake master cylinders, clutch slave cylinder, wheel cylinders, and fresh hoses. Brakes were further refreshed with freshly machined rotors and drums, as well as new pads and shoes.
Underside photos detail condition of the drivetrain, running gear, frame rails, rockers, core support, and floors. Images of the chassis plate and matching engine stamping can also be found in the gallery. Records from prior to the refurbishment are largely unavailable, but a number of photos are provided below to document the refreshment process.
