This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL is believed to be production number 305 of more than 237,000 R107s built from 1971-1989. The car was refurbished over the seller’s 12 months of ownership with a full repaint, ignition services, a new soft top, plus thorough interior and engine bay detailing. Finished in white with black lower panels, this example was delivered new with a Becker Europa radio and Behr air conditioning. It is thought to have been sold new in Napa, California and was acquired by the seller out of New Mexico. The 4.5-liter fuel injected V8 is said to be original and is backed by a 3-speed automatic transmission. This 350SL has been driven about 500 miles since the refresh was completed, and it is now being offered with records for the recent work, EU papers stating all import taxes are paid and a clean Texas title.
The seller notes the car appears to retain original panels and shows no obvious signs of bodywork or accident repairs. Recent refurbishment included replacement of weather stripping all around, fitting of a new black soft top, and the addition of H4 headlights. There is a small ding on the rear bumper, as shown in a gallery photo.
The car was finished in white when acquired by the seller, and it received a full repaint in the same color using PPG paint. This early R107 was originally Medium Blue and could have been delivered with black or grey lower side panels. Bundt alloy wheels wear Michelin Harmony tires all around, and the trunk holds a non-matching spare with Michelin tire.
The interior is said to retain its original seats and carpet. Also original is the Becker Europa radio which is not currently wired in. A dash cover has been added over the cracked original, and there is a small repair to the driver’s seat base. Windows are operated manually, and there is no center armrest. A VDO clock is positioned between two dash vents, and the odometer registers 119k miles, with actual mileage unknown. The A/C system has been converted to R134a refrigerant. The seller believes the following details visually identify this as on early R107 car:
Different hood ornament
Chrome Mercedes emblem in grille
Teardrop shaped front turn indicators
Retaining screw in vent louvers below windshield
Steering wheel with integrated chrome horn buttons
Gear shift bezel with chrome position indicator
Foot-operated windshield wiper switch
The 4,520cc SOHC V8 features Bosch fuel injection and was rated at 230 hp in early North American-delivery cars. The block carries number 117.98x – xx – xxx0299 (partially obscured) which appears to match the Data card above, indicating this is likely the original engine. A solid brass radiator and overflow reservoir are fitted, while the seller has added a new exhaust system and muffler. Under-hood work completed during the last 12 months included the following:
New Bosch or Mercedes parts:
Distributor cap, rotor, sparks plugs and wires, hoses and belts
Battery, cables, starter and coil
Fuel injectors cleaned
New valve cover gaskets
New oil, air, and transmission filters
Engine compartment thoroughly detailed
A removable hardtop is included, and is also shown mounted on the car in a gallery photo. This 350SL received a Silver Star Preservation award when judged at a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Club of America event.
