This 1974 Volkswagen Thing was sold new in Encinitas, California and shows 32k miles from new. The original owner reportedly kept the Thing through 1977, and the second owner had it from 1977 through 2003 before it was acquired by his daughter. The Thing is reportedly unrestored, with Avocado Green paint, black leatherette upholstery, clear vinyl side curtains, and OEM black top. In August 2017 the last replaced the ball joint boots, fuel hoses and battery, re-packed the CV joints, overhauled the Solex carburetor and performed a general tune-up. This Thing is offered with the original window sticker and fresh Dutch registration.

This Thing is finished in Avocado Green, which is believed to be nearly all original. The seller has signed affadavits from the third and fourth owners affirming that the paint is all-original, though the seller states that the bumpers and wheels have been painted, and there appears to be a touch-up at the left rear of the car. Factory welds in that area are said to be intact.

The original clear-vinyl side curtains are fitted. The original vinyl side-curtain bag is included and pictured in the gallery. Detailed photos are provided of the convertible top, including the stamped VW logo in the plastic rear window. A small crack is visible in the top’s outer layer just forward of the top bows on the passenger side.

The cabin is upholstered in black leatherette, which shows a small tear in the driver’s seat back and some indentations on the driver’s seat bottom. The stock four-spoke Wolfsburg steering wheel is in place, as is the stock VDO speedometer-fuel gauge. 32k miles are shown, and this total is supported by a handwritten mileage log which was used regularly by the original owner, and shows that the car was stored and used sparingly by subsequent owners.

The rear seats fold flat, and show some minor marks on the seatbacks.

The trunk is finished in Avocado green, and the factory spare is in place on the stock mounting bracket. The original, unmounted tires and tubes are also included.

Power comes from a 1600cc flat-four with a single carburetor. No modifications are noted by the seller. The seller’s records show that within the last 15 years and ~2,500 miles the car has received new brakes, clutch, steering dampener, shifter bushings and shocks. In August 2017 the previous replaced the ball joint boots, fuel hoses and battery, re-packed the CV joints, overhauled the Solex carburetor and performed a general tune-up.

The original window sticker is included, as is the dealer equipment sheet showing the originally added undercoating and fuel filter. The final sticker price was $3020.95 with the additional items. A fitted Covercraft car cover is included with the car.
